ROGER II

Crowning of Roger II (Palermo, church of the Martorana)

Under his rule of Ruggero II. Son of the great count Ruggero, unified the dukedom of Puglia and territories of the count of Calabria and Sicily. In 1130 he was crowned king in Palermo by the antipope Anacleto II. In 1140 he promulgated a collection of laws called " Assise di Ariano " (" Arian’s Assizes"). He appointend officials to run the Kingdom and reinforced the army. Died in 1154. The centralization of all the powers into the king’s ands and bureaucracy brougt about by Ruggero II were a model for the monarchies to come.
